Alternate Versions: To allure more viewers the German vending gadget (Buena Vista International) grate out one bloodthirsty scene to receive a "Not lower than 12" rating. The German video loosen contain the crammed edition and be rate "Not under 16"., Some US TV edits of the movie remove the Russian swearing done by the terrorists (for example, when Gary Oldman finds out that the escape pod was deployed and he yells twice, the sound heard is a yell from later in the movie)., The US TV version is edited for content, including: the opening scene has less shots of Russians being shot, the scene where Gibbs shoots three secret service agents is at a different angle (the camera is on him the entire time, instead of showing bullets hitting the agents), a terrorist wacking a secret service agent in the face with his weapon, Egor shooting a communications officer, Egor shooting the co-pilot (no blood), Egor shooting Doherty, Marshall breaking one of the terrorists' neck (removed completely), Egor's death (his neck doesn't snap), Radek's death (we never actually see him getting shot), the PJ's death (it's framed so there's no blood splattering on the wall), Caldwell's death (it's framed so we don't see blood), and numerous swearing.
FACT: Members of the Soviet/Russian Army are prohibited to have a beard by military regulations., FACT: Members of the Russian Army only salute with a hand when wearing hats., FACT: The in-flight refueling hardware on the real Air Force One makes a bulge visible below the cockpit window. The Boeing 747 used in the film lacks this bulge. There are numerous other differences between the plane depicted in the movie and the real Air Force One. See also the trivia entry., CONT: Disappearing/reappearing bullet holes in the hostage room., CONT: When President Marshall fights with the terrorist in the room with the football game on TV, the stool is lying down, then it is standing up, then it is lying down again., CONT: Papers in President Marshall's hand in the conference room., FAKE: One of the MIG pilots makes a sound of surprise just before a missile hits the plane yet they would have been warned by their instrument systems that a lock-on had occurred and that missiles were on their way., FACT: Jumping out of a plane at 200 knots and immediately opening a parachute of the kind in the movie is probably going to break the sail, yet only clean openings are shown., FAKE: President Marshall says in Russian: "He's dead, help," to fool one of Russian hijackers. His accent is terrible and would never fool a Russian speaker., FACT: None of the planes used as the real Air Force One have an escape pod. President 'Bill Clinton (I)' (qv) is said to have remarked on this detail after seeing the film at a White House screening., FAKE: When Marshall and Korshunov are fighting, Korshunov presses Marshall's face against a panel of buttons which are obviously fake., FACT: The base at which the pilots attempt to land after the hijacking is identified as "Ramstein Air Force Base". The actual name is "Ramstein Air Base"; "Air Force Base" is only used for installations in the United States., GEOG: The F-15s launched from Ramstein, Germany have "EG" tail markings, which means they are from Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. Aircraft assigned to Ramstein have tail markings "RS." Also, Ramstein does not have fighter aircraft. The nearest US fighter bases in Europe are in Spangdahlem, Germany; Aviano, Italy; or Incirlik, Turkey., CONT: In the opening sequence, the dot from a laser sight rests on the back of the sentry's head, and the descending shooter is above the sentry, yet, when the shot comes, the explosion is neither back out of the rear of the head, nor out the front of the head, but rather straight up., CONT: 'Jrgen Prochnow' (qv) plays General Ivan Radek, yet he is credited as "General Alexander Radek"., SYNC: When Col. Carlton is telling Marshal how bad the damage is, his mouth under the mask is still moving after he has finished speaking., FACT: The Air Force One pilot on the ground says that there is no automatic landing capability on the aircraft. All 747s have the capability to land on auto pilot. Later model 747s and every 757, 767 and 777 also has semi-auto takeoff., FAKE: The same sound effect is used twice within about 10 seconds of each other. As the plane is first landing at Ramstein, there is a quick shot of the passengers falling all over the conference room, and you can hear a mans voice saying "Ahhh... Geez!" A few seconds later, as the plane is heading at the control tower and before the wing slices the tree, the exact same voice is heard saying the exact same thing, but this time it is supposed to be coming from the control tower., CONT: SPOILER: When Agent Gibbs shoots Major Caldwell, blood splashes on Gibbs's face and forehead. In the next shot when he struggles with the President, there is blood only on his right cheek and his forehead is clean., CONT: The handguard of the H&K MP5A3 that the president has, changes from the old slim type to the new wide type after the scene when the terrorists are shooting through the toilet doors., GEOG: Both the Russian and the American presidents speak Polish instead of Russian as do some of the Russian kidnappers., CONT: When the terrorist fires at the toilets, the bullet spray on the back wall of the second toilet (that he opens) is different from the spray on the door., SYNC: Lip synching doesn't match when the Air Force "PJ" (pararescue jumper in the back of the C-130) talks into his helmet microphone, saying "Liberty 24 is changing call signs, Liberty 24 is now Air Force One.", FACT: By design, the external doors on modern jet aircraft cannot be opened during flight. Though the low altitude of the film's dramatic final rescue scene might permit opening the door (as the pressure differential holds it shut during flight), it still would not open outward as portrayed in the film and would instead need to be opened inward and swung out through the doorframe., PLOT: SPOILER: The President of the United States has no authority over the President of Russia on a matter involving the conditions of a Russian prisoner in a Russian jail. The Russian President was doing the American President a personal favor by releasing Radek. Even if the 25th Amendment had been enacted and the Vice President became the Acting President, she would be in no position to overrule the President and order the Russian President not to release Radek, as he has no reason to obey her. While the Russian President could of course respect the new President's wishes, this would have nothing to do with her status under the 25th Amendment, which is what the film wrongly implies., FACT: As the aircraft swerves about the aerodrome and goes to take-off again the terrorists do nothing about the flaps (set at 40 degrees for landing). The increased drag caused by the flaps at this setting wouldn't allow the aircraft to take off at all, let alone take off in such a short distance., FACT: When Air Force One is told to change the heading to take it out of Kazakhstan, they are told to turn the dial counterclockwise from 110 to 290, through 360. This would turn the aircraft left (as in the film), but the display takes it through 200, which would turn the aircraft right., FAKE: The Air Force One's crash into the Caspian Sea was created using CGI. The CGI splashes seem to have the horizon visible through them., CONT: The film only shows and implies that three PJs are transferred to Air Force One, yet the First Lady, daughter and 'Shep' are taken by a PJ each to the C-130 and one is shot by Gibbs., FACT: After retaking the plane, the President asks the Major if he knows how to fly and the Major indicates no, despite wearing command pilot wings on his uniform blouse. He would have to be a highly experienced aviator to qualify to wear those., FACT: During the refueling scene when AF1 breaks away fuel is seen spraying out of the boom of the KC-10. The fuel ignites and the flame travels up the boom and blows up the KC-10. Onboard the KC-10 there is a Boom Operator who monitors and has full control of the fuel that the tanker is receiving or giving at all times and also flies the boom. The Boom Operator would have raised the boom as soon as AF1 broke away and cut off the fuel supply long before the fuel could ignite., CONT: When Marshall boards the plane he is greeted by the captain who he addresses as Danny, yet during code red, neither of the pilots resemble 'Danny' and are referred to as Jeremy and Artie., FAKE: When the President is hanging on the rope behind the MC-130, the aircraft's wing is visible through the President., PLOT: SPOILER: The C-130 was originally designated a "strike package". As such, it would have no need to be equipped with "parajumper" harnesses, or a winch with a long rope., FACT: SPOILER: During the first "parajumper" transfer, someone can be heard giving directions to AF1. But as the disabled aircraft, it would have been struggling just to maintain course, altitude, and speed. Any corrections would have been made by the C-130., FACT: Asking a person with no parachute experience to jump in these conditions might be more dangerous than staying on the plane. If the canopy does not rip apart (as someone already noted), they are jumping at night with only moonlight into unfamiliar terrain that might have wires, rocks, trees, water, fences, as well as the ground itself that they do not know how to land on even in bright sunshine., CONT: When Harrison Ford tries to enter the conference room with the keys he got from one of the terrorists, he gets shot and there are bullet holes on the door. But somehow these bullet holes are missing in the next conference room scene when Gary Oldman comes to threaten and shoot the National Security Adviser., FAIR: SPOILER: The name "parajumper" suggests that there is a parachute involved. Apparently, if this is the case, then why couldn't they bring parachutes over to Air Force One? It's because by the time the C-130 had reached Air Force One, the latter was already flying over the Mediterranean Sea. Air Force One couldn't go over land, either; it was clearly going to crash eventually, so flying it over land would have put many lives at risk., CONT: When they are in the war room talking waiting on the news that the President wasn't in the war room, the camera is panning to the left. Before the camera passed by the Defense Secretary there is a general talking to someone in the background as the camera passed to the left of the Defense Secretary the stand in that was talking to the general mysteriously disappears. They apparently stopped filming during that time and forgot to put the stand in back in place., CONT: When the hijackers are trying to get into the cockpit, Oldman puts C4 explosive on the keypad, then shoots at it and misses. He then puts C4 on the (now cleaned-off) keypad again, shoots at it, and successfully blows the door. Where did the first glob of C4 go?
Crazy Credits: 'Jrgen Prochnow' (qv) plays General Ivan Radek yet in the cast list he is credited as "General Alexander Radek".
Alice Marshall: I'm 12 years old, dad. In caveman days I'd be having children of my own.::President James Marshall: That's what we call progress, young lady., Grace: She couldn't stay your little girl forever Jim.::President James Marshall: I know. But I was hoping she could wait until she was 14 or 15... or 50., President James Marshall: If this works, you get to be Postmaster General., President James Marshall: Peace isn't merely the absence of conflict, but the presence of justice., Egor Korshunov: You who murdered a hundred thousand Iraqis to save a nickel on a gallon of gas are going to lecture me on the rules of war? Well DON'T., Alice Marshall: You are a monster, and my father is a great man. You're nothing like my father!, General Northwood: Nobody does this to the United States. The President will get his baseball glove back and play catch with this guy's balls!, President James Marshall: Did you hear my speech?::Grace: Yeah.::President James Marshall: Yeah?::Grace: You're gonna get yourself re-elected.::President James Marshall: That's what I keep telling them., President James Marshall: GET OFF MY PLANE!, F-15 Fighter Pilot 'Halo 2': Sir, pull up! You've got one on your tail.::President James Marshall: Get him off my tail!::F-15 Fighter Pilot 'Halo 2': Missile away. Air Force One. Break left and climb!::Major Caldwell: Sir, we've lost countermeasures.::F-15 Fighter Pilot 'Halo 2': This is Halo-2. They've lost countermeasures. I'm going in.::[takes the missile for Air Force One], White House General: [after hearing the president] My God! Is he saying what I think he's saying?::Vice President Kathryn Bennett: If we're going to act, we have to act now.::Defense Secretary Walter Dean: It's too risky.::Vice President Kathryn Bennett: The president is up there with a gun to his head.::General Northwood: He asking us to do that to Air Force One?::Vice President Kathryn Bennett: He's not asking. Your Commander-in-Chief has issued a direct order. Do it!, President James Marshall: The dead remember our indifference. The dead remember our silence., President James Marshall: The truth is, we acted too late. Only when our own national security was threatened, did we act., President James Marshall: Never again will I allow our political self-interest to deter us from doing what we know to be morally right. Atrocity and terror are not political weapons. And to those who would use them, your day is over. We will never negotiate. We will no longer tolerate and we will no longer be afraid. It's your turn to be afraid., Egor Korshunov: The President is safe - but then you must know that. He ran from here like a whipped dog! I'm sure you can't wait for him to get back to making the decisions so you can stop... sweating... through that silk blouse of yours!, Vice President Kathryn Bennett: What are your intentions?::Egor Korshunov: What arrogance... to think you could ever understand my intentions!, Egor Korshunov: When you talk to the President, you might remind him that I am holding his wife, his daughter, his chief of staff, his national security advisor, his classified papers - and his baseball glove!, [Crossing three wires blindly]::President James Marshall: I'm counting on you, red, white and blue., Egor Korshunov: Your national security advisor has just been executed. He's a very good negotiator. He bought you another half hour., President James Marshall: I trusted you with my life!::Agent Gibbs: So will the next president!, Melanie Mitchel: Mr. President, the Russian news crew is with us. I told them you'd give them a sound bite about life in the White House.::President James Marshall: There *is* no life in the White House!, Colonel Carlton: Okay guys give me some room. I've just been ordered to fire on Air Force One., Sergei Lenski: We have the President., Egor Korshunov: I understand that Air Force One can refuel in mid-air. Well we need fuel, and we need it now.::Vice President Kathryn Bennett: I'm sure we can come to some kind of arrangement. If you land the plane we'll trade fuel for hostages.::Egor Korshunov: This is bullshit! It's simple physics. Without fuel the plan crashes,::[scoffs]::Egor Korshunov: everybody dies!::Vice President Kathryn Bennett: We're trying to do everything we can.::Egor Korshunov: Tell me what I want to hear or I will execute a member of the senior staff and continue killing one hostage every minute until the plane crashes, or refueling plane arrive. Well what do you say?::Vice President Kathryn Bennett: Fuel's on its way.::Egor Korshunov: Thank you., Liberty 24 Pilot: [as the President reaches Liberty Two Four] Liberty Two Four is changing call signs - Liberty Two Four is now Air Force One!, President James Marshall: Kathryn, if you give a mouse a cookie...::Vice President Kathryn Bennett: It's gonna want a glass of milk., Egor Korshunov: You can end this all with one phone call Mr. President!, Agent Gibbs: I'M GETTING OFF THIS PLANE!, President James Marshall: [after seeing an enemy plane being blown up] HAHAHA. The good guys are here., [last lines]::Liberty 24 Pilot: Mr. President, welcome aboard, sir!, National Security Advisor Jack Doherty: [to Ivan] The Vice President in this case is like the Queen of England. You can't even buy airline tickets without talking to someone like me. Therfore, let me speak to The White House because I can assure you, I'm the one person who can make this all work out., Egor Korshunov: I want General Radek released from prison.::President James Marshall: How can I do that? I can't do that! DON'T ASK ME FOR SOMETHING I CAN'T GIVE YOU!, [first lines]::Major Perkins: [after landing in Kazakstan] Quick head count! One, two, three, four, five. Move out!, [Ivan has just killed Melanie Mitchell]::Egor Korshunov: I know what you're thinking First Lady, you want me dead. Well we may come to that. You see people do die in wars.::Grace: This isn't war! YOU JUST MURDERED AN UNARMED WOMAN!, [Ivan has just killed Jack Doherty]::Alice Marshall: Why did you kill him?::Egor Korshunov: Because I believe., [Phillips is talking Marshall through dumping fuel with the avionics panel]::Phillips, AFO Chief Mechanic: Hold on, just let me double-check, sir...::President James Marshall: Oh, for Christ's sakes, man, hurry up!::Phillips, AFO Chief Mechanic: Sir, if you get the wrong wire, you'll cut the engine feeds, and the plane will crash.::President James Marshall: Then we don't want to get the wrong wire, do we?, Vice President Kathryn Bennett: How the hell did they get Air Force One?, Egor Korshunov: I would turn my back on God Himself for Mother Russia
Soundtrack: "L'Internationale" Written by 'Eugne Pottier' (qv) & 'Pierre Degeyter' (qv)
The lead role was written for 'Kevin Costner' (qv), but he was heavily committed to _The Postman (1997)_ (qv), and suggested 'Harrison Ford (I)' (qv) for the part., When Valera gives his thumbprint for a background check near the beginning of the film, the date of birth that comes up among his info (3/21/58) is actor 'Gary Oldman' (qv)'s real birthday., The usual Air Force One is one of two modified Boeing 747-200s. To represent it, the filmmakers rented and repainted a Boeing 747-146, which had originally belonged to Japan Air Lines, from the cargo carrier American International Airways (AIA). The paint job cost $300,000. The 747s pilot, 'Paul Bishop (I)' (qv), also came from AIA. See also the goofs entry., The sequence set at Ramstein AB, Germany, was filmed at Rickenbacker International Airport, Columbus, OH. Because the aircraft had to be visible even though the scene was supposedly taking place at night, a small amount of sky light was required; this restricted filming to two 15-minute intervals each day, at dusk and dawn., One morning, the frantic activity of taxiing and braking during this period caused the 747's wheels to overheat - triggering a safety device that deflates all the tires rather than risk a blowout., The shot where the 747 swerves on the ground at Ramstein was performed at half speed., The final sequence where a cable is extended from an MC-130 to the 747 was filmed near California's Channel Islands. 'Paul Bishop (I)' (qv) flew the 747 in formation within a few feet of the MC-130. The camera plane, a modified B-25, had a top speed of about 230 mph, so the sequence was filmed at about 200 mph and the 747 had to be flown with flaps extended. This sequence is a nearly a shot-for-shot copy of a similar air to air rescue involving an MC-130 and a Boeing 747 in _Airport 1975 (1974)_ (qv)., The cable really was trailed behind the MC-130, but its connection to the 747 was a special effect., 'Harrison Ford (I)' (qv) told 'Gary Oldman' (qv) to actually hit him during the filming of the fight scenes., When a dummy was put on the cable, the 747's bow wave blew off its coat and tie. Rather than put the plane's engines at risk, the filmmakers decided to use special effects for all shots of the people on the cable., One day during filming, two F/A-18 fighters appeared and radioed in a surprised report that the plane they'd been asked to identify was Air Force One and there were bullet holes in it. (They were actually decals). The air traffic control center in Los Angeles knew about the filming and was able to set them straight., 'Randy Newman (I)' (qv)'s score was cut late in post-production by director 'Wolfgang Petersen (I)' (qv) for being "too loud and blatty." Bootleg copies are in circulation., After 'Randy Newman (I)' (qv)'s score was rejected, director 'Wolfgang Petersen (I)' (qv) hired 'Jerry Goldsmith' (qv) to compose the replacement score. The task proved too daunting in the time available, so Goldsmith brought in 'Joel McNeely' (qv) to write music for several sequences based on the themes he had already prepared for the film. After the film was released, Goldsmith publicly stated he would never accept a replacement score assignment again., The outdoor nighttime shots of the military invading Radek's palace were filmed in Cleveland, Ohio. The building that is supposed to be Radek's palace is actually Severance Hall, home to The Cleveland Orchestra. In some shots, you can see part of adjacent Case Western Reserve University's Thwing Center - a student union consisting of a glass atrium between two brick buildings., The Russian prison where Radek is held during the movie was filmed at the Mansfield Reformatory, the same location as the prison in _The Shawshank Redemption (1994)_ (qv)., Distributors wanted a 'PG-13' rating, but were denied it by the MPAA., Scenes depicting the interior of Radek's Palace were filmed inside the Cuyahoga County Courthouse in Cleveland, Ohio. The U.S. team runs down the stairs in front of the statue, all in the Courthouse lobby. There is also a scene in a narrow hallway that was filmed in the Courthouse Law Library., The production was allowed to use CNN's actual Los Angeles studio for its mock CNN segments., 'Gary Oldman' (qv)'s (Ivan Korshunov) chilling performance earned him the nickname "Scary Gary" during production., The painting of the plane used as Air Force One was done at a facility in Amarillo, Texas that specialized in refurbishing older jet planes for use by other airlines., SPOILER: 'Wolfgang Petersen (I)' (qv)'s commentary and some other stories on the movie say that the original script explained that Secret Service Agent Gibbs had been a CIA Spook and had lost a lot due to the end of the Cold War so was angry at the US Government and knew the terrorists from his CIA days. It was decided it took too long to tell so it was cut from the script., Although there are two specific 747s used and maintained by the Air Force for the president's use, the "Air Force One" designation is the air traffic control sign of any aircraft carrying the President of the United States., SPOILER: One of the producers wanted Ivan Korshunov to die by being thrown out of the plane by President James Marshall. But the writer thought it would be too obvious, so they stuck with his idea that Marshall snaps Ivan's neck by wrapping a strap around his neck and opening his parachute. Although Marshall releasing his grasp on Ivan was the producer's idea., The actor 'Ilia Volok' (qv), who plays the first Russian killed by 'Harrison Ford (I)' (qv), stars in an episode of _"Friends" (1994)_ (qv) where he plays a Russian Launderette owner who has pictures of famous people on the wall who use his store. Joey tries to get his picture put up but the store owner is offended by how Russians are portrayed in his show. Joey points out that there is a picture of Harrison Ford on the wall and that he was in Air Force One where Russians are terrorists. The owner says he hasn't seen the film and Joey says he should because it's great., SPOILER: The explicit filming of execution shot of Press Secretary Melanie Mitchel was omitted from the final cut as the director 'Wolfgang Petersen (I)' (qv) thought it was too intense., 'Harrison Ford (I)' (qv) went before the MPAA and appealed to have the movie re-rated to PG-13, but they refused., On the DVD commentary for the movie, director 'Wolfgang Petersen (I)' (qv) noted that he likely would not have made the film after the 9/11 attacks. The film features hijackers seize the plane carrying the President of the United States and his family, but he (an ex-soldier) works from hiding to defeat them., On the DVD commentary if 'Harrison Ford (I)' (qv) did not want to play the led role then 'Arnold Schwarzenegger' (qv), 'Keanu Reeves' (qv) and 'Dennis Quaid' (qv) would be the other choices to play the led role., The football game that the presidential staff taped for President Marshall is actually the September 12, 1992 game between Michigan and Notre Dame in South Bend. The game was not a 14-13 win for Michigan, but a rare 17-17 tie. Prominent Michigan players found in the video footage include then-future pros Elvis Grbac and Ty Law.
